Keen to stay: Eagles CEO excited by Reid negotiations

West Coast CEO Don Pyke says that all indications from Harley Reid and his management are that he wants to remain an Eagles player.
Speculation has been rife since Reid was taken with pick No. 1 in the 2023 draft that he’d return home to Victoria early on in his career amid serious interest from multiple cashed-up clubs in the state.
While there’s no doubt other clubs are hoping to entice the 20-year-old home, recent reports have been positive for the Eagles with Reid’s camp reportedly presenting options to West Coast regarding staying, including a supposed 11-year deal worth $24 million.
With negotiations moving along well between Reid’s management and the club, Pyke is hopeful that a deal can get done soon, with his current contract ending at the completion of next season.
“It’s moving along well,” Pyke told SEN WA Mornings.
“Probably since Harley has arrived, it's been a unique situation, and that probably continues.
“The pleasing part for us is that all indications from Harley and his management are that he's really happy here and he's keen to stay here.
“It's now just about working through the next bit. We respect that it's a big decision for Harley, and he’s a 20-year-old in his second year of football.
“We’re all excited by the prospect of having him part of the next phase at West Coast.
“We'll keep working through that with his management and Harley himself and see where we go.
“Obviously, he's still contracted for next year. But if we can get something done, we'd like to do that.”
Given some of the reported long-term big-money offers available to him if he requested a trade home to Victoria, Reid and his management are said to be after a two-year deal until the end of 2027 with a nine-year extension on top of that.
While the reported $2 million a season figure has been reported in the media, Pyke refused to confirm or deny how much the Eagles were willing to offer their young gun.
“I think every negotiation has got a start point and it doesn't matter even if you're buying a house, everyone starts with a buy and sell price in mind,” Pyke said.
“As I said, we're dealing with a unique situation and the numbers that are thrown around, I'm not here to confirm or deny those, but we'll have a good conversation with management.
“There's a number of layers to it as well within this, it's a lot of money obviously for a player, and does that limit your ability to add more players to your list?
“Obviously, it's a lot of pressure on a second-year player around those sort of numbers, and we’re cognisant of those things, so we’ll work through that with his management.
“Hopefully, we can get ourselves something which keeps him happy, which recognises his value and recognises the potential for him to be a great player for us for a long time.”
Even if a deal can’t be struck before this year’s trade period in October, Pyke has full confidence that he’ll at the very least see out his contract until the end of the 2026 season.
“Yeah, we are (confident he’ll be here in 2026),” Pyke said.
“He's contracted here until next year, and we'd love to be able to get something done, and if we can't, we'll have to maybe park it and pick it up later on.
“Obviously, it's going to continue to be a talking point until the decision is made one way or another.
“But he's enjoying his time here, he’s really engaged with the group, I think Andrew (McQualter) has said that a few times.
“He’s very much now part of the group and wants to see us get back to where we want to be, which is not where we are at the moment.”
Reid has played 39 games for the Eagles across his first two seasons. He’ll sit out the rest of the 2025 campaign with a syndesmosis injury.
