Titans owners' blunt message for critics amid Hannay-Bellamy saga
Gold Coast Titans co-owner Bec Fizelle has vehemently denied her club was doing anything dishonest or deceitful in their approach to Craig Bellamy despite having just hired Josh Hannay as their new coach.
Last month it was reported that Hannay's three-year contract had a clause that could see him move into an assistant coach position in 2027 should the club be successful in securing Bellamy as its coach.
The news was described by industry experts as a misstep in management, not least by SEN’S Corey Parker, who questioned the club’s stability.
Joined by Frizelle this morning, SEN Breakfast hosts Parker and Ian Healy were told: “I'd like to clear this up now, cause it did bother me that you would think that we would be dishonest or not transparent with our incoming coach regarding Bellamy and Josh Hannah.
“I'd like to say on the record, we would never operate that way. We're pretty straight shooters, and we'll always be transparent.
“We would never treat anyone poorly like that.
“I hope that clears it up for the public, that there was nothing we did that neither Josh or Bellamy were not across.”
It’s be a tumultuous period for the Titans who this year sacked Des Hasler as their coach after a disappointing season which saw them finish 16th on the ladder with just six wins to their name.
Hasler had replace Justin Holbrook who was sacked in round 12 of the 2023 season when the club was sitting ninth.
Moreover, big name players have been linked with moves away from the club with Tino Fa’asuamaleaui recently declaring he will enter the open market and is widely expected to be snapped up by the Perth Bears.
The 25-year-old is expected to be on the receiving end of multiple offers in the $1.5 million-per-year range and has voiced his disappointment with the current state of affairs on the Gold Coast.
“I do really want to stay at the Titans but I want to see things improve around the place and that’s (by) winning,” he said recently. “I have tried to do that for five years, to try to win, and there have been a lot of ups and downs.
“I want to see improvements throughout the whole club and see it heading in a good direction. I love the Titans and I want to win there and change (the club).”
Asked if she was confident about the club’s ability to hold on to Tino and other big names given their recruiting boss has joined Mal Meninga out West, Frizelle said: “I’m not too worried about the Perth Bears.
“I wish them all the success. I think they've got a big challenge ahead.
I think them coming in is great for the game but in terms of us, it's a big ask to ask people to move across to Perth, the time difference, the travel.
“It's gonna be a challenge, and I think I'm pretty confident with our playing group and where they sit.
“I'm not overly worried about the Perth Bears and if we do lose people to them, well, I wish them luck.”
Frizelle said her priority within the club now is improving the culture which Hannay is the driving forces behind.
“He’s got a lot of change coming the poor buggar,” she said. “He is a breath of fresh air.
“He has ideas and initiatives. He’s a great communicator across the business and that plays into culture.
“What it's about is the people and the quality of the people you put around it, around you, and the standards that you enforce and you lead with yourself.
“That sets the culture, what you will tolerate and what you won't tolerate, and what you're prepared to walk by.”
