Buckley: Chasing Silvagni is a shrewd move from Collingwood

If Nathan Buckley was coaching anywhere in the AFL he would be chasing the signature of Jack Silvagni amid the relentless speculation the Carlton star is bound for Collingwood.
It has been confirmed today by current Magpies coach Craig McRae that he has met with Silvagni and that the meeting went well.
The 27-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season and, despite having an offer in front of him to remain at the Blues, nothing has been signed and the Pies have reportedly tabled a very similar deal.
Silvagni has become a key player down back for the Blues this season despite being sidelined with a groin injury, but it seems he is set to defect to black and white - a move described as “shrewd” by the former Collingwood coach.
“If I was coaching anywhere in the competition, Jack Silvagni would be a player I would love to have on my list,” Buckley said on SEN Mornings.
“He’s had a horrendous run with injuries in the last three or four years (but) he is going to play his best footy in the next five seasons.
“If I’m Carlton I would have been doing everything I could to not lose him, but it seems like that for whatever reason, where the club has been, how he has been managed potentially, he has decided to look over the fence.
“He would not have had to look far to find suitors.
“I think it’s a really shrewd approach by Collingwood because he will really help them in the next few years.”
According to SEN’s Sam Edmund, Carlton’s Silvagni offer is close to $700,000 a season over four years.
Collingwood’s just eclipses that, but it’s not all about money.
“I don’t know Jack that well, he’s a stand-up young man with the right values,” Buckley said about the attributes he would bring to Collingwood.
“He is everything Carlton have needed in the last couple of years. You could put him in any role on the field and he will find a way.
“He’s not fast but he’s a massive competitor, he is strong in the contest, he never gives in and he’s got leadership.
“You could not have enough Jack Silvagni’s on your list. He will be a massive loss for Carlton and a massive get for any other club that could get him.”
