The 2024/25 thoroughbred season concludes in Hobart on Sunday with an eight-race card. It's a strong program to wrap things up, headlined by the 1400m Open Handicap.
The rail moves out to +9m after being at +6m last week. A significant rainfall forecast for Saturday is expected to bring another track in the soft range.
Best bet
Race 1 – 1. Colonel Bogey
Colonel Bogey returns with a significant spruik. At his only career start in February, he ran into a very smart 2yo, and connections had to abort the late Summer Festival features as the horse went sore. He was very impressive winning a Devonport trial last week, and the stable is in red-hot form after four winners last Sunday. There is some depth to the race, which hopefully holds the price up about Colonel Bogey.

Race 7 – 10. Silver Dagger
I’ll go with the Bazan stable again for my other special, looking for Silver Dagger to make it a hat-trick of wins. The 3yo filly couldn’t have been more impressive winning a class 4 and 3yo handicap recently, and now strikes a very strong open class race. I like gate 1 for her, as this race lacks a lot of obvious pace, and her ability to settle handy, and use her brilliant turn of foot will be important. She’s started well into the red at both runs this time in, but the depth of this field should hopefully see a better price.

Race 8 – 2. Gee Gee Miss Quita
I think we’ll see each-way odds about Gee Gee Miss Quita, particularly given the SP profile of the toppy, Just A Needs. I’m forgiving of the run of Gee Gee Miss Quita last Sunday, shuffled well back from the low draw, she never saw a lot of daylight from there. She’s unproven at 2100m, but all three previous attempts have been in feature races where she was far from disgraced. She’s in well with the claim for Jabez Johnstone, and I think Gee Gee Miss Quita’s class can prevail.
