"Considering an appeal": Stephen Silvagni breaks down outside court
AFL legend Stephen Silvagni has broken down outside a court house while delivering an emotional statement, insisting his son Tom is innocent after he was convicted of rape.
Earlier this week, County Court of Victoria lifted a suppression order allowing the 23-year-old to be named a week after he was found guilty.
Tom is the son of Carlton legend Stephen, and brother of St Kilda star Jack. His grandfather Sergio was a two-time Premiership player for the Blues.
“Jo and I, together with our family members and friends, are so disappointed with the outcome,” Stephen Silvagni said outside court.
“We all love and support our son Tom. Our son continues to maintain his innocence, and we stand firmly behind him.
“We will be considering our options to appeal and shall not be making any further comments on this case.
“Our goal is to clear his name and bring him home and we ask for our privacy and to be respectful. We're very grateful for how well supported our family is."
Before being convicted, a court heard that Tom went into a woman’s bedroom, climbed into her bed and digitally raped her in January 2024.
Tom was found guilty on two charges of rape and is awaiting sentencing.
In Victoria the maximum penalty for rape is 25 years.
