Taking the crown this week for our Rural Roundup Sportsperson of the Week is the country’s top fencer, Tony Bouskill.
He’s one of New Zealand's most accomplished competitive fencers - with a trophy cabinet that includes a World Fencing Championship, six Golden Pliers titles, six National Doubles Championships, five Rural Sports Speed Fencing Championships - and the honour of becoming the first fencer named New Zealand Rural Sportsman of the Year.
In Monday's episode of The Rural Roundup, Tony shared how he got his start in fencing, what it's like competing alongside his father Shane Bouskill in the National Doubles Championships, and whether running a fencing contracting business is enough training to stay at the top of the sport.
He also takes listeners behind the scenes of competitive fencing, we hear about his challenges losing his five-time national title winning streak after a big oopise, and how he overcame that to get back to the top.
