Chip off the old motor: Hawkeswood creates NZ rally champs history

Jack Hawkeswood has made New Zealand Rally history, taking out the championship title on Sunday in Whangarei with one round remaining.
Joining Sport Nation's The Rural Roundup as the 'Rural Sport Legend of the Week' for a yarn, Hawkeswood said it was an incredible feeling.
He also claimed the title of the first-ever second-generation driver to win the New Zealand Rally Championship, following in the footsteps of his father Andrew Hawkeswood in 2017.

“He was pretty emotional," Hawkeswood told host Erin Speedy.
"It’s not often you see dad very emotional. He was just absolutely wrapt for us.. it put that little extra cherry on top of the championship.”
Hawkeswood’s title rival Jack Stokes crashed heavily and ended his hopes of a maiden championship and of following in the footsteps of his father too, former national champion Brian Stokes.
“Those boys they drove fantastic all year, it was going to come down to the absolute wire at the last rally and I was really looking forward to that but that’s rallying and that’s just how a sport goes.”
