Rural Sport Legend: Hamish Macdonald on world titles, gnarly crashes and what’s next

This week’s Rural Sport Legend is Hamish Macdonald, one of New Zealand’s top enduro riders, with three World Championship titles to his name through eight years competing at the top level of the sport.
Home in Christchurch for a break from the international circuit, the 27-year-old joined Sport Nation's The Rural Roundup to talk all things enduro, from his career highs to coming back from hard knocks, and what’s coming next.
Macdonald chewed the fat with host Erin Speedy about his 2026 international season, where he came in 5th outright in the EnduroGP Championship and 3rd in E2, after making the switch from a two-stroke to a four-stroke.

They also got into the nuts and bolts of enduro racing, some of the gnarly moments throughout his career, and what New Zealand needs to be doing to develop the next generation of riders - Macdonald hopes his own career can help show young riders what’s possible.
While the FIM International Six Days Enduro is coming up, Hamish won’t be competing this year - instead, he’s already setting his sights on 2027, where he hopes to lead the New Zealand team to Wales.
Before then, he’s off to Japan in September to compete in the Japanese Enduro Championship.
And Kiwi motorsport fans could also get the chance to see him back racing on home soil for the first time since 2020, with Hamish hoping to line up in the New Zealand Motocross Nationals.
