Mark Chapman's decision to move to a casual contract with NZ Cricket opened the door for Northern Districts fast bowler Matt Fisher. The 26-year-old has been clocked bowling genuine heat at 150 km/h - but who is he?
Speaking in a recent interview with Sport Nation's Alex Chapman and Sam Casey, Fisher opened up about his extensive development, overcoming a rare shin injury, and the aggressive mentality he brings to the crease.
Despite the upgraded contract status, Fisher’s day-to-day routine remains grounded in pre-season training with Northern Districts. His winter, however, was highly active under a 'player of interest' contract.
Fisher toured with the Blackcaps to Bangladesh and the West Indies, and participated in a specialised New Zealand A batting camp in Chennai focused on playing spin. Most recently, he competed in the Top End T20 tournament in Darwin, where a young NZA squad gained valuable exposure.

Fisher’s progression has required overcoming significant physical hurdles, most notably Compartment Syndrome in his shin. After managing the condition since his early teens, a severe flare-up during a trip to South Africa led to pressure testing and eventual surgery. While the procedure necessitated a cautious, extended rehabilitation period to safely rebuild his bowling loads, Fisher is now operating at full capacity and managing only minor footwear adjustments.
With New Zealand's 2026/27 home summer underway, Fisher embraces the intense competition within New Zealand's fast-bowling ranks.
Rather than shying away, he views the crowded fast-bowling cartel as a collaborative environment where veterans like Matt Henry and younger players constantly share knowledge. On the pitch, Fisher intends to maintain his identity as a genuine fast bowler: running in hard, hitting the bat heavy, and bringing an unapologetic, aggressive presence to the national side.
Having played alongside the likes of Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra during the Under-19 World Cup, Fisher is primed to translate his long-term potential into consistent international impact.
