Te Aroha trainer Peter Lock is looking forward to resuming his talented mare Debit at Otaki on Saturday where he is hoping to get her on a path towards attaining black-type.
The six-year-old daughter of Darci Brahma has shown plenty of ability for Lock, winning four of her first five starts before disappointing last spring when unplaced in both of her outings, with Lock citing feet issues for her subpar showings.
“It has been a bit of a frustrating time,” Lock said. “We had a couple of little issues with her feet and it took a bit of time for her to come right.
“We decided to give her a good break, let her feet grow properly and start again.”
She put in a confidence-boosting performance at the Te Awamutu trials last month where she won her 1150m heat by 2-1/4 lengths, and Lock is hoping she can put in a similar performance when first-up in Saturday’s Jennian Homes Handicap (1200m).
“It looks like there is a lot of speed on in that race, which is really going to be up her alley,” Lock said. “She can jump and just tuck in behind, and if she can go half as good as she did in her trial she will be very competitive.”
Black-type has always been the aim for Debit and Lock is keen to give her an opportunity of attaining it this year in a bid to secure her future broodmare career.
“We would love to target a black-type race for her, but she will have a couple of runs under her belt before we decide where to go and what we do,” Lock said.
Lock is equally excited to head to Otaki with his exciting mare Jungle Love, who will be fresh-up in the Vets On Riverbank Handicap (1400m).
The four-year-old daughter of Ace High has won two of her three starts to date, and Lock holds her in high esteem.
“I think she is one of the better horses I have trained. She is a very exciting mare going forward,” Lock said.
“I think she will run a big race, even though it is 1400m and she is looking to go further. Her granddam won the Oaks and she is out of a Zabeel mare who won a couple over 2200m, so I think staying is going to be her go.
“She has just shown so much speed and we are very excited about her on Saturday.”
Lock will also be represented by new stable acquisition Joejoeccini, who will have his first outing for the stable in the Otaki Tyre Repairs Handicap (1600m).
“He is a lovely horse and 2000m is going to be his go,” Lock said. “He has run a couple of very good seconds over 2400m at Te Rapa and we are hoping he can win a couple of nice races and hopefully have a crack at the Waikato Cup (Gr.3, 2400m). He likes Te Rapa and 2400m.”
A day later, Lock will head to Hawera with just the one runner – Mighty Macca in the Spray It Maiden (1600m).
“He is a very nice horse in the making,” Lock said. “He has been unlucky, he should have won his first start at Otaki and we rode him a bit upside down last start. I think he is spot on at the moment so here’s hoping for a nice weekend.”
Looking ahead to winter racing, Lock is excited about the prospects of several of his runners over the colder months.
“Vittorio Veneto has won three on the synthetic and we are really looking forward to getting him back going,” Lock said. “He won very impressively at his last start on the grass at New Plymouth but he just loves the synthetic, so we are going to have a crack at that $100,000 race with him.
“We have got Reliable Squeeze who won the $80,000 maiden race (at Ellerslie on Boxing Day) and she is back in work. Pick Of The Litter loves bad ground and Our Time has come back nice and strong.
“We have got some good horses around us at the moment, it is very exciting.”
