Kiwi gymnast Courtney McGregor finished fifth in the Commonwealth Games Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Vault final, having achieved her major goal of qualifying for the event.
After a five-year hiatus from the sport, McGregor’s campaign began strongly, with a successful qualification round that saw her progress to the vault final and ultimately place fifth in the event.
"I really wanted to make that vault final, that was kind of my big goal in getting here," McGregor told Sport Nation's Scotty & Izzy.
"I had to place in the top eight in the qualifying round, so stoked to make it into that final."
Her fifth-place finish came against world-class opposition, making the result even more meaningful.
“The standard is really high at the moment. In the vault final today, the Canadian Lia (Lia-Monica Fontaine) who took the gold, she's ranked second in the world on the vault.
“So, definitely a really high-calibre field. So it feels great to come away with (a) top five finish.”

And the greatness from McGregor didn’t stop there, also making it to the all-around final, where she placed 15th of 56 competitors.
“Last night I had the all around final which isn't really necessarily my event, so it was kind of cool that I made that final.
The result is especially impressive given McGregor has not long been back in training, after taking several years away from the sport.
“I think it's given me a lot of confidence and I've only sort of been back training for 16 months since I took a few years off.
“To be in this shape quite soon after deciding to make the comeback and the whole purpose of the comeback was to enjoy it a bit more this time around and not take things so seriously, just enjoy the experience and it's pretty cool that I could also get some amazing results while I'm doing that.”
