Promising filly Girlzgirlzgirlz broke her maiden status in fine fashion at Tauranga on Saturday when she showed her rivals a clean pair of heels from barrier rise in the opening act on the card, the Gartshore Construction Maiden (1200m).
The Donna Logan-prepared daughter of North Pacific was having just her second start after showing potential when finishing fourth at the venue a month ago on a Good4 track surface.
It was the complete opposite on the weekend with the Tauranga track coming up a Heavy10 after 89mm of rain during the week. That didn’t dampen the chances of the filly who relished the underfoot conditions in the hands of four-kilogram claiming apprentice Tom Wigram.
Wigram bounced Girlzgirlzgirlz away smartly from barrier 11 and crossed down to the rail within 200m before setting up a steady speed out in front.
Challenged by Casa Rubick shortly after turning for home, Wigram let the brakes off the filly who dashed away to win with plenty in hand over local runner Starlight Rose and Casa Rubick who fought out the minor placings.
Logan was thrilled with the ride and to get the win on the board for the filly’s large group of female owners who race her under Kylie Bax’s Lets Go Girls syndicate banner.
“After walking the track with Tom, we decided the rail was as good a place as any and with no weight on her back we had to take advantage of that,” Logan said.
“He (Wigram) rode her perfectly as I told him not to flatten her to get her there (the lead) and to keep some petrol in the tank, so it was a perfect ride.
“Tom had said she was one of only two horses to have beaten Well Written after she beat her at the trials (back in August last year), so with that form line we were pretty confident.”
Wigram summed up the race succinctly, noting once the filly found the front the race was as good as over.
“We thought the rail wasn’t that bad so from the outside barrier she jumped well, found the lead easily then kicked away from them,” he said.
“Once she was out in front she relaxed beautifully.”
Bred by Bax’s parents Helen-Gaye and Graham, Girlzgirlzgirlz is the second foal out of the Australian stakes winner Jungle Light.
She was purchased by Bax and Logan for $70,000 out of the Blandford Lodge Book 1 Sale draft at Karaka in 2024.
