Blackcaps fast bowler Lockie Ferguson recently joined Sport Nation Mornings with Riccardo Ball and Alex Chapman to discuss the physical toll of his craft and his tech-driven approach to load management.
At 35, Ferguson continues to bowl at great speeds but is highly aware of the physical demands the role places on the body. To help mitigate stress-related injuries across the sport, he has developed 'Yorker' - an app designed specifically to monitor bowling workloads.
Earning praise from New Zealand bowling legend Shane Bond, the app allows players to track critical variables like overs bowled, practice intensities, and run-up speeds. Ferguson noted that his goal is to build an open, knowledgeable community where fast bowlers of all levels can share information to improve performance and career longevity.
The interview also touched on the rapidly shifting landscape of professional cricket. Drawing on his nine years of experience playing in the IPL, Ferguson addressed the growing trend of players opting out of central contracts in favor of global franchise opportunities, viewing it as a natural transitional phase for the modern game.
Ferguson is set to feature in the Blackcaps' T20 squad for a five-match home series against India, beginning October 22, as part of a pace bowling attack that also includes Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson. Zak Foulkes has been ruled out with a hip flexor injury with Blair Tickner coming into the squad as replacement.
