Voss: Nathan Cleary will move overseas and this is why

The rumour mill around Nathan Cleary’s future in the NRL and Australia is working overtime with reports he is set to make a code switch to rugby union the latest whisper and Andrew Voss is convinced we’re about to see the last of the Panthers star.
Earlier this year, Cleary was linked with a move to the English Super League with many believing his relationship with Matildas and Manchester City star Mary Fowler was the primary lure to that side of the world.
This week, Cleary has been linked with playing union which pays considerably more in the UK than league.
Voss believes the time is now for Cleary to capitalise on the pull of his surname and make the move to the northern hemisphere – but not switch codes
“I’ll get a little romantic,” Voss said to his co-host on SEN 1170 Breakfast. “There is no doubt the young man is in love and his love is on the other side of the world and his love is never coming back to Australia for her sporting career because she can’t.
“Nathan has won four premierships, Origin, he’s a Test player, World Cup; he has achieved all the things you want to do in a career and I’m saying love might win out here.
“I’m not saying playing union but I can see Cleary playing in the northern hemisphere.
“It’s obvious they’re in love and how long can that relationship be on the other side of the world when there is a solution?”
The main obstacle to Cleary playing in Europe and England is cash.
Rugby League in England doesn’t have anywhere near the money as in Australia but Voss has a solution.
“If NRL Europe comes into being and I think it will be announced later in the year with grandiose plans,” he said.t “Teams in London and France, they will pick how they want the comp to look.
“I don’t know where the money comes from but I think a London marquee signing of Cleary at some stage makes sense.
“Nathan Cleary ticks a massive box, that gives them the headline they want, they become an A-list couple, I’m talking massive picture here.”
Unwilling to be drawn into the speculation, Voss’ co-host and Penrith deputy chairman Greg Alexander said he had not heard anything to back up the link with Cleary moving to union.
“There's been rumours around the super league for quite some time and I would cancel that out right now,” Alexander said.
“I cant see him going to the English Super League, they don’t have the money, their salary cap isn’t big enough. I don’t think this happens.
“I haven’t spoken to Nathan or Ivan about it.
“His contract is end of 2027 so I would be surprised if he went to Union but that’s not to say it won’t happen.”
