Te Akau Racing have once again surpassed the 100-win mark in a season, bringing up the milestone this term when Perlino took out the Selwyn Rakaia Vets (1600m) at Riccarton Park on Saturday.
It continued a successful day for trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson who earlier in the day recorded their 14th New Zealand stakes triumph of the season when Origin Of Love won the Gr.2 Wellington Guineas (1600m) at Trentham.
Te Akau principal David Ellis said he is proud of the stable’s continued success.
“It’s a special milestone that we’ve managed to achieve for quite a few years in a row now,” he said.
“I remember Mark Walker set a new benchmark for wins when he trained 108 in the 2009/10 season, eclipsing the previous 17-year-old record, which was a very proud moment for Te Akau and we’ve kept it going.
“Karyn (Fenton-Ellis) and I are very proud on every level. We’re proud of the horses we’ve bought and syndicated, the horses we train for other owners and breeders that support Te Akau, and all our wonderful staff here at the farm and the stables in Matamata, Riccarton, and Melbourne.
“These people give everything they’ve got to the racing industry and looking after the horses.”
Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson now hold a 27-win lead over their nearest rival Stephen Marsh and they will be seeking to maintain that advantage as they aim to notch up the stable’s 17th New Zealand Trainers’ Premiership.
