John and Karen Parsons’ stable foreman Mahipal Singh got his first taste of success as an owner at Riccarton on Saturday when Swey Loch took out the Bain McCall Memorial Two-Year-Old (1000m), and he is now eager for more.
A loyal employee, the Parsons were keen to reward their stable foreman and afforded Singh the opportunity to choose a young horse in their barn to take a share in, and he selected Swey Loch.
Bred by the Parsons, Swey Loch is by Sweynesse and out of stakes performer Locket, and showed plenty of precocity when winning his debut trial at Ashburton last November. He went on to run fourth on debut over 1000m during New Zealand Cup Week before he was sent for a spell.
He resumed with a trial win over 800m at Riccarton earlier this week and his trainers elected to head straight to the races with him this weekend where punters backed him in their droves, and Swey Loch jumped a $1.90 favourite.
Swey Loch jumped away well under jockey Tina Comignaghi, and from their handy barrier of three they were able to settle outside early leader The Graduate. Swey Loch quickly took the lead and didn’t relinquish her advantage, extending her advantage down the straight to score by 2-3/4 lengths over Imelda Melody, with a further 1-1/2 lengths back to The Graduate in third.
Singh was duly over the moon with his first triumph as an owner, and he couldn’t thank his employers enough for the opportunity to race the gelding alongside them.
“I am thankful to my bosses, they have supported me and they have given me the chance to have my first horse,” Singh said.
“They said ‘you can pick out one horse’ and I picked this horse, and he is a good one, he is only a two-year-old.
“The other day he was impressive at the trials and I felt he would be hard to beat.”
Swey Loch’s victory sealed a winning double for the stable at Riccarton on Saturday, with stablemate Kiwi Magic taking out the first race of the meeting, the Grand National Tickets On Sale Now Rating 65, with apprentice jockey Floor Moerman in the saddle.
