Lightly-raced filly Getaway showed she could be in for a profitable spring when she showed remarkable resilience to cling to victory in The Lawn Shed Winter Series – 3YO Final (1600m) at Ellerslie on Saturday.
The Kurtis Pertab-prepared daughter of Shamexpress was having just her fourth start when taking on a handy field of age-group rivals, having won on debut at Rotorua before finishing fourth at that venue next up and then runner-up at Te Rapa last month.
Rider Courtney Barnes had her away nicely from a wide barrier to sit just off pacemaker Shameless Star before enjoying a trail behind that runner and Arthur, who moved at the 800m to sit outside the leader as the pace sharpened markedly at that point.
Barnes angled Getaway into the clear shortly after straightening and the filly shot to the front out in the middle of the track where she fought best to hold out the late charge of Savvy Donna and the fast-closing Anora.
Pertab was pleased with the grit the filly showed as he looks ahead to her spring campaign.
“She is still very green and doing a lot wrong, but it was nice that we got out into a good position early and then had some soft sectionals, which meant she was always going to be in for the fight,” Pertab said.
“It’s what you want to see from a three-year-old as she is going for a spell now and then back for the spring as a four-year-old.
“She will have a month off as she has done a great job and hopefully there is a stakes race for her in her next campaign.”
Barnes admitted the pre-race plan for the filly worked out well and showed just how tough she was.
“It was a really tough effort after settling nicely before there were a couple of moves mid-race that put the speed into things,” she said.
“The plan was to sit outside the leader, where she got it easy, and it worked out well as she was just very tough.”
Bred and raced by Windsor Park Stud, Getaway is out of the High Chaparral mare High Tail it. Her extended family includes Australian Group One winner Ike’s Dream.
