The SEN team has provided a handful of mid-term grades across the AFL.
Through 12 rounds, teams have began to establish their ranks within the competition - enough so to receive a grade from Gerard Healy, Sam Edmund and the SEN.com.au team, judging their work ethic and attention to detail throughout the first half of the year.
Kicking off with the Bulldogs, Healy and Edmund presented each team with a lettered grade on SEN Sportsday.
HEALY'S MID-TERMS
Western Bulldogs
“Despite numerous injuries to key players you have excelled and are in a great position to attack the end of year exams,” Healy said.
“Impressed with your dedication – A+, despite the fact that you’re in ninth position.”
Sydney
“Expectations were perhaps a little high, what did you expect following last season?
“Injuries have hit hard but you have simply failed to convert your opportunities been distracted by commercial issues and failed badly in the serious mid-season exams.
“So, for the Swans – I’ll settle on an E, after having strongly considered an F.”
Collingwood
“Despite a complete collapse under the sun in Sydney in orientation week, you’ve turned back the clock!
“The threat of the retirement home, to embarrass those ageists that wrote you off completely before the season began.
“An A+ to the Pies, and a special mention to star students (Jamie) ‘Billy’ Elliot, and Jeremy Howe.”
Port Adelaide
“An erratic application and too easily distracted – E.”
North Melbourne
“Despite some students showing great improvement, too many of you are simply not consistent enough with your study. A big improvement required to graduate.
“At this stage – a D, and that’s probably generous.”
Melbourne
“Simply too many truants in the early part of the year. Too many blokes having too many days off.
“Love is a four-letter word, but so too is work, and 50 percent of workdays off means you forgo the love at years’ end.
“Not guaranteed to fail, but at this stage – a D.”
Hawthorn
“Excellent last year but it’s a four-year course. So far, too many have taken too much for granted.
“Look a different class without class captain Will Day – a D at this stage, despite your spot in the eight.
“On second thoughts, maybe I’m being a bit of a harsh teacher, a C for the Hawks.”
Essendon
“Despite failing any meaningful tests for the last 15 years, your last few weeks have shown extreme promise, particularly from some of the new boys – I’ve given the Bombers a B.”
St Kilda
“You’re well down on talent in your class but you’re working exceedingly hard most weeks. Need to make sure there are no defections to star students.
“Finished off extremely well – B-.”
EDMUND'S MID-TERMS
Carlton
“Called in for a parent-teacher interview for concerning behaviour. Lack of energy and class, ranked well in the dour subjects like physics and biology but struggling badly in PE, where they refuse to move, and also in drama where they are incapable of showing any sign of life – C-.”
Geelong
“Always seems to have extra money for lunch orders, but knows when to knuckle down in class, always does their homework and is always at the top of the class when it comes to effort and application.
“I feel like this student will just get better as the year goes on – A-."
Gold Coast
“After years of being sent to detention or in fact wagging school altogether, we note a remarkable change in behaviour with this kid.
“Brains have gone through the roof; there’s an application and an attention to detail – A-.
“However, we still want to see if they can be trusted in the last couple of terms in the school year. When it comes to the final end of your exams, they often haven’t turned up.”
SEN.COM.AU'S MID-TERMS
Adelaide
“Headmaster Nicks is now in year six and his students have fallen in line. In the early days he asked the uncommitted to ‘pack their bags’. Now that lesson is having an impact.
“The Crows are destined to excel with the current curriculum, provided they continue to apply themselves. The year to date is going to plan but there promises to be some very testing exams still to come.
“A for Adelaide.”
Andrew Slevison
Brisbane
"Winning the Dux award in 2024, this student is evidently one of the most naturally gifted in the class.
"Despite continuing to grade amongst the top of the class, they are yet to fully apply themselves to the best of their ability.
"While passing most tests rather comfortably, this kid mustn’t allow themselves to get too comfortable, with a number of smart students threatening to claim the award.
"With that being said, this student is evidently gifted. Talent off the charts – A."
Jaiden Sciberras
Fremantle
"A smart student, with enough resources to succeed, however struggling with the added expectations.
"Their method of study and performance on exam days have raised eyebrows, yet their recent results within tough tests indicates clear improvement.
"A relatively easy run of assessments to come, this student should find themselves in good stead if they can maintain their current work ethic - B."
Jaiden Sciberras
GWS
"What to make of this student…
"Evidently talented. Has the ability to pass the toughest of tests, and has done on occasion, however let down by lapses a little too often.
"Strong tutoring and a consistent routine, this intelligent student just needs to remain focused throughout class - B-, with potential to rise over the coming three weeks."
Jaiden Sciberras
Richmond
“The greenest and rawest of students are being shown the way by some fabled seniors and a second-year teacher.
“Everyone expected a dunce but the Tigers have shown they are so much more.
“The class of 2024 has done plenty to help fast-track this rebuild which appears to be well ahead of schedule. B+.”
Andrew Slevison
West Coast
“While this student was hardly considered amongst the smartest in the class, further improvement was most certainly expected.
“Opting out of fresh supplies and taking on a range of used materials, West Coast may have stunted what should have been a fast-tracked learning schedule.
“Although struggles may persist, there is no denying that Mr. McQualter’s guidance can shape this student over the next few terms, building a study routine to hone in on this student’s learning potential.
“Work to do, yet hope is not lost – C+."
