“Bin them”: Derm’s reaction to finding Bombers gear in the wash
Dermott Brereton admits it’s been tricky coming to terms with his partner’s son landing at Essendon.
The Hawthorn legend has a storied rivalry with the Bombers and as a result his tolerance for the red and black could be described as quite low.
In the mid-season rookie draft last week, Archer May was selected by the Dons out of WAFL club Subiaco with Pick 6.
May, 20, is the son of Dermie’s long-term partner Julie who is back living with them after his stint in Perth.
Brereton says seeing Bombers gear at his house is taking some getting used to.
“I don’t know how I’m going to deal with it,” he joked on SEN’s Dwayne’s World.
“We’ve been away in Bali, I got home last night and I thought I’ll put the washing in the washing machine. I got all the clothes we had in Bali, went to the machine and young Archie had done a load of washing.
“How foreign is it for me to pull an Essendon training top out, to pull Essendon shorts, to see Essendon socks in the washer.
“I felt like binning them.”
But in all seriousness, Brereton was absolutely thrilled when May’s name was called out by the Dons last week.
He is expecting the ever-growing key forward to develop into a very handy player at the elite level.
“We were rapt, absolutely delighted,” Brereton told foxfooty.com.au last week.
“We actually first thought Collingwood were going to take him.
“He’s going to be a brute; an absolute brute … believe it or not, at 20, we’re still noticing he’s growing. He’s a very late developer.
“He is a massive kid; he’s huge through the quads and thighs, really powerful.
“He’ll be a straight-line player. He’ll develop into something like Tom Hawkins, but Archie’s actually got a really good tank.
“When he does his endurance training, he’ll be running along with the midfielders. He’s got a really good tank on him for a bloke with massive quads. Very powerful through (there), which will give him real power.”
May did not debut for Essendon’s VFL side last week but could be in the mix for this Sunday’s clash with Carlton at Windy Hill.
