Northland’s Ranfurly Shield celebrations will begin with a special visit to one of the province’s most passionate supporters.
The Taniwha lifted the Ranfurly Shield for the first time in 48 years after defeating Canterbury at Te Kaha Stadium on Thursday, sparking emotional scenes among players, families and supporters.
Former All Black and father of Brady Rush, Eric revealed the shield’s first stop will be to see 'Bluey', the beloved Northland superfan who was unable to attend the Taniwha’s historic victory over Canterbury while unwell.
“Bluey’s a bit crook at the moment, but I believe that’s the first stop for the shield,” Rush told Sport Nation Breakfast.

And the second visit will be to team member Zion Going who has recently been diagnosed with GBS syndrome.
“Zion Going is in hospital as well, so it will go there next.”
The shield is expected to be greeted by a large crowd at the airport before also being taken around Northland, with the team keen to share the historic trophy with communities across the region.
Rush said the players would visit as many places as possible this week, knowing there was no guarantee the shield would remain in Northland beyond its first challenge.
“They’re going to make sure that they share the love,” he said.

The shield will likely make its way through towns including Whangārei, Kaikohe, Kerikeri, Matauri Bay and Ōhaeawai as celebrations continue.
Northland’s win was particularly meaningful for Rush and David Holwell, whose son also featured after both former players had tried unsuccessfully to win the shield during their careers.
“48 years, man. I don’t think they realised what they’ve done just yet,” Rush said.
