Local trainer Terri Rae will have strong representation at Riccarton on Saturday, and she is hoping to reward her clients with a couple of winners’ cheques.
The Oaks Stud filly Cashla Bay scored a deserved victory over 1400m when fresh-up at the Christchurch track last month and she will attempt to repeat that result in Saturday’s Listed NZB Insurance Stakes (1600m).
The daughter of U S Navy Flag was denied black-type by just one placing when running fourth in the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes (1400m) at Wingatui on Boxing Day, and she will be seeking to rectify that this weekend.
“She is pretty consistent and honest,” Rae said.
“She had a good win last start, which is ideal going into the mile. She is getting over ground for the first time, which doesn’t pose as any problem. She has got a reasonable draw (6), her work is good and she is fit and well.”
All going to plan, Cashla Bay will return to Riccarton in a fortnight where she will step up in distance once more in the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes (2000m).
“We are thinking she should be fine (to back-up in the Warstep), but obviously we will get through Saturday first,” Rae said.
Stablemate Spot On Time is also in line for a stakes assignment in a fortnight and will ready for his tilt at the Listed Daphne Bannan Memorial Great Easter Stakes (1400m) with a first-up hit-out in Saturday’s Angus Meats Open Handicap (1200m).
The six-year-old son of Time Test has won seven and placed in four of his 12 starts to date, and Rae is looking forward to him resuming this weekend.
“He is carrying a fair bit of weight (60.5kg with the assistance of apprentice jockey Triston Moodley’s one-kilogram claim), but he is always right there. He is a smart customer,” she said. “He will go onto the 1400m stakes race in two weeks.”
Spot On Time will be joined on Saturday by Texas Dolly, who has finished runner-up in her last two outings, and she will have to overcome her outside draw of 12 to try and improve on those results.
“She hasn’t got a great draw (12), but she will just go back and run home,” Rae said. “She has got Michael McNab on, who has won on her before.”
Later on the card, Rae will have a three-pronged attack in the TAB Southern Alps Challenge (1600m), and she is looking forward to competing for the $350,000 purse.
Sir Albert (9), Witz End (18) and Contemplation Bay (6) have mixed draws, and Rae said a couple of her runners will need plenty of luck from their gates.
“Draws obviously help you in those big fields and it is a bigger field this year than last year,” Rae said.
“Witz End didn’t get such a good draw, Contemplation Bay has got a good draw to work with and Sir Albert has got a nice draw and he comes in a couple,” Rae said. “It is a good field so they will need luck in the running.”
