Report: Smith set to reunite with former assistant coach
The reigning premiers in the Brisbane Broncos have reportedly signed NRL legend Cameron Smith to join the side’s coaching staff for the 2026 season.
It was reported by Peter Badel in The Courier Mail on Thursday that discussions between head coach Michael Maguire and Smith have taken place about a potential move which would see him work in a mentoring capacity with the players.
If it becomes official, this would be the latest move that Smith has made to dip his toe in the coaching space following his retirement from playing.
In 2022 and 2023, the 433-game player for the Melbourne Storm was an assistant coach for the Queensland State of Origin side, which saw the side alongside former club teammate Billy Slater claim the series in both years.
He was also rumoured to have been in contention for the Kangaroos’ head coach position, which would be subsequently awarded to Kevin Walters ahead of this year’s Ashes series, with Smith being appointed as a selector.
If Smith joins, it would be a reuniting between himself and Maguire, with the two-time NRL Premiership coach having been an assistant coach at the Storm between 2004 and 2009.
It would also be somewhat a reunion between him and the Broncos after being overlooked by the club when he was coming through the ranks as a junior in Queensland.
The Broncos are yet to publicly confirm the signing.
