The intriguing stat to help you find the Melbourne Cup winner
There is a very intriguing stat that could help you break down the Melbourne Cup field and find the winner.
Racing broadcaster Jason Richardson has revealed that seven of the past 10 Cup winners (and eight of the past 11) raced in June in the year of their 3200m Flemington triumph.
Richo and co-host Lizzie Jelfs discussed the lead-up to the great race and how competing somewhere in June has helped provided residual fitness for that year’s eventual winner.
That suits this year’s favourite Half Yours who ran second in a BM78 at Rosehill in June.
“Seven of the last 10 winners of the Melbourne Cup have run in June,” Richardson said on SEN & RSN’s Get On Spring.
“Most people think you need to spell in June and July and run in September, October, November.
“But seven of the last 10 have run a race in June. Some internationally, some in Australia. Half Yours has done exactly that.”
Mounting yard specialist and form guru Jelfs also pointed out that having a Queensland run in June can be helpful as a lead-up strategy.
She said: “And what about Queensland as well?
“That’s been a big launching pad for a lot of these Melbourne Cup winners.”
Richo added: “Knight’s Choice, Without A Fight, Vow And Declare all in Queensland.”

Drilling down on Half Yours, trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, Jelfs says she can find pros and cons for the Caulfield Cup winner.
But the fact he has elite wet track form brings him right into contention for what will be a soggy Cup day.
“If I was to play devil’s advocate, I do think that he’s a terrific chance but I do think the Caulfield Cup seemed to me like it was his absolute Grand Final,” she said further.
“They’re just going to have to keep him ticking over into the Melbourne Cup. But he’s got the right pedigree to be able to win, he’s got a turn of foot which is fantastic, he loves the wet.
“He’s even better on a wet track than he is on a dry track and he won a Caulfield Cup on a dry track.”
