Manly prop forced into early retirement
Manly Sea Eagles prop Josh Aloiai has been forced into medical retirement after failing to overcome an ongoing shoulder injury.
Aloiai played 164 appearances across his NRL career, but only managed five games this season, with his last match against the Broncos in Round 13.
The prop began his career at the Wests Tigers in 2016 before shifting to the Sea Eagles in 2021 where he became a regular fixture in the front row.
The club announced Aloiai suffered serious damage to his right shoulder which ultimately meant he was unable to perform at NRL standards.
The NRL agreed to retire the 29-year-old on medical grounds.
In a statement, Aloiai reflected on his time at the Sea Eagles.
“I loved my time at Manly and I’m very proud to have finished my NRL career at such a wonderful club,” Aloiai said.
“I have formed a huge number of great relationships and bonds that I am incredibly grateful for.
“I give Jesus all the glory from start to finish.”
Sea Eagles CEO Tony Mestrov paid credit to the retiring prop.
“We wish Josh and his family the very best with their future,” said Mestrov.
“He gave his all in his five years here at Manly, displaying resilience and professionalism.
“Josh would often play through the pain to help his team and he was a highly respected member of the playing group.”
Aloiai made five Test appearances for Samoa.
