Into the Metaverse: Brakey opts for the back up

Metaverse pulled up so well after his narrow loss last week that trainer Angela Brakey has decided to back him up in Launceston on Friday night.
Metaverse loomed to win the 2000m BM76 last week but was beaten in a tight finish by Fast Thinker, who fought back to win.
“He’s not a sit and sprint horse, and he just pulled up full of running, that’s why I’ve decided to back him up,” Brakey said.
This week, Metaverse us up in class, racing in a BM76 but drops back in distance to 1600m in what will be his third run in from a spell.
“The calendar is a bit hit and miss at the moment. There’s really no option, but he’s pulled up well, and Codi (Jordan) knows him well; she rides him the best out of anyone.”
Metaverse has won three times over 1600m, and this will be his third run in from a spell.
“He actually fractured his fetlock in the Summer Cup last year after he had won the Brighton Cup, so he had a bit of time out, so hopefully we can get him through to the Cups this year.”
Earlier in the night, Brakey will saddle up Silver Grange in the 1220m 3yo maiden. Silver Grange will be one of the top fancies in the race after a solid third placing on debut.
“Silver Grange has just taken a little while to mature, mainly mentally. He raced really well first-up, and the extra 100m will suit him down to the ground.
“He’s probably more of a mile type horse;, but his mother (Hushama) had an amazing turn of foot, she could gallop, and he’s inherited the same ability.”
Silver Grange was bred by Brakeys’ sister, Mandy Gunn, at Motree Thoroughbreds.
“I was undecided whether to go to 1400m, but this seemed like a suitable race, so we will step him up after Friday night.”
Although Silver Grange was beaten five lengths in that race on 12 October, the winner, Swift Force, looks to be well above average, and his run was full of merit.
Jordan, back from a week’s suspension, will also ride Silver Grange, who has drawn barrier eight in a field of eight.
The former premiership-winning jockey has a strong book of rides and could be worth backing for the jockeys’ challenge.
The first race is scheduled for 18:00, and Matt Reid will be joined by injured apprentice Lauryn Bingley for coverage on Tasracing Live.
