Why Freedman isn't concerned with Tentyris' weight in Newmarket

History says that three-year-old Tentyris will struggle to win the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on Saturday with his weight of 57kg.
There has only ever been one three-year-old in history to win the Newmarket with 57kg on their back – Ajax, all the way back in 1938.
Despite this scary stat for the race favourite, co-trainer Sam Freedman isn’t concerned, referencing stablemate Tropicus’ recent victory against Point Barrow in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).
“For this horse, I'm not really worried about (the weight),” Anthony Freedman’s co-trainer said on SENTrack & RSN’s Correct Weight.
“It gets chatted about a little more than I probably think it should.
“It's obviously relative to what other horses are carrying… Going into the Oakleigh Plate, everyone wanted to say Point Barrow had no weight (50kg) and Tropicus carried top weight (58.5kg). (Tropicus) gave them a spanking.
“You can't really argue with what weight he gets because his rating reflects his abilities. At the end of the day, that's a handicap and that's the way it works.
“Ultimately, we were keen to see him down the straight.
“His track rider at home is a lot heavier than what he's carrying on Saturday, so not overly concerned (with 57kg).
“He works up the hill here at Pinecliff with 70kg on his back every time he gallops, so he's still going to be carrying a lot lighter than what he does here at home.”
In fact, Freedman is actually more confident heading into the Newmarket compared to the son of Street Boss’ first-up run in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m).
“I think the horse is improving still, he’s probably getting better,” Freedman revealed.
“He's probably better suited out to six furlongs (1200m) than he was at 1000m.
“I don't think there's any reason why he won't be at the very least holding his form and possibly improving off what he did in the Lightning.”
Tentyris is currently the $2.30 favourite with Sportsbet to win the Newmarket Handicap on Saturday.
