Honest Wests Tigers approach praised by Alexander
Greg Alexander has supported how coach Benji Marshall and captains Api Koroisau and Jarome Luai approached Thursday's press conference regarding Lachlan Galvin.
The Tigers called a press conference which featured the two captains in Koroisau and Luai, as well as Marshall to give the media somewhat of an explanation as to what has happened regarding the star five-eighth after his decision to leave the club after 2026.
In the press conference, the three would come out to explain what had happened relating to Galvin with Marshall admitting that Galvin owed him and the club nothing but was disappointed he didn’t resign.
Speaking on SEN 1170’s Breakfast, Alexander was pleased by the honest approach the trio took believing that had Galvin not raised Marshall’s ability to coach, it wouldn't have become such a big story.
“I thought it was honest,” he declared.
“It wouldn’t be easy for the players to get up and talk about the fact… and in a nutshell, I thought both Api and certainly Jarome just encapsulated what I thought the problem was and what it has been.
“It was a criticism of Benji, that’s what didn’t go down well.
“The criticism of Benji didn’t sit well with the playing group and that’s where the issue is.
“If we were just talking about the decision that Lachie Galvin made to not re-sign with them after ’26 and there was no criticism of Benji or a little slap towards the senior players who weren’t going to develop his game, well, we would be talking about it but not nearly to the same extent.”
Alexander was also keen to express the thought that Luai and the players should be trying to fix their relationship to help allow Galvin to be back in the NRL side.
“From my point of view, I would be mending,” he said.
“If I was the leader of the club, I’m not one to hold a grudge but everyone is different.
“But I would be thinking, well Lachie Galvin is a plus to have him in the team, I would be thinking let’s get them in the team, let’s sort things out to a point where everyone is comfortable with where we stand.
“Let’s get him in the team.”
The Tigers will take on the Parramatta Eels without Galvin in their traditional Easter Monday clash at CommBank Stadium.
