Colin McNiff's Sunday racing preview at Devonport (17/05)
Mark Ganderton is within reach of a training milestone at Sunday’s meeting on his home track in Devonport.
With a double in Hobart last week, Ganderton now has 199 career winners and could well chalk up the double century on Sunday, even though he will saddle up just two starters.
“I didn’t realise that, but I will take it, it would be nice to get a couple of hundred winners,” Ganderton said.
Ganderton looks to have a strong chance with Adachi in the BM68 (1350m) and Turbo Chook, who resumes in the class 1 (1150m).
Adachi has had two runs in from a spell, and a fortnight ago finished well to be beaten in a tougher race. The 6yo has a great record at the track and has won third-up in the past.
“He’s been a tremendous horse since he arrived. I think the worst placing he has ever run was a fifth, and when he did run fifth, he was beaten 1.3 lengths by Hobart Cup winner Blonde Star; he just never runs a bad race.
“I think his record at the 1350m at Devonport is three runs for two wins and a second, so he loves the trip, and he loves Devonport.”
The BM68 is only a field of six, but you could argue the case that most of them could win. Ganderton has opted for the state's leading apprentice, Jabez Johnstone, to take the ride and use his 1.5kg allowance.
“I’m a big believer that you have good and bad runs in this caper. Things are falling into place for us at the moment. The old saying is the harder you work, the luckier you get,” Ganderton said after his recent run of success.
While Ganderton is quietly confident Adachi could provide his milestone win, he also has the lightly raced Turbo Chook resuming after a couple of solid trials. The 4yo has raced only twice and won first-up last preparation.
“He’s got ability, but he’s an Alpine Eagle, and he’s one of those finicky buggers upstairs. He’s already had a lot of gear changes; he takes a bit of working out, but he certainly looks, this time in, as if the penny has dropped for him. His trials have also been professional, so if he takes that into the race on Sunday, he will be extremely hard to beat.”
It’s a strong class 1 with a maximum field. Turbo Chook has drawn barrier two and will be ridden by Troy Baker, who has also been enjoying a run of success.
“The low draw helps us ride him, we can let him find his own spot and keep him in his comfort zone, and you say I’m in good form, no one is in better form than TB at the minute.”
The first of the eight races on Sunday will be at 11.50, and you can catch all the action from the track on Tasracing Live hosted by Matt Reid.
