West Coast’s Harley Reid knocked back the biggest deal in football history to re-sign with the Eagles, according to AFL Media’s Cal Twomey.
This report comes after Reid re-signed with the Eagles for two more seasons last week, tying him to the club until the end of the 2028 season.
While Reid was happy to remain in Perth, Hawthorn was the club that tried everything possible to lure him back to Victoria.
According to Twomey, the Hawks tabled a deal worth around $1.7 million a season to Reid across 11 years.
Currently aged 20, that deal would have taken Reid through to the 2036 season at Hawthorn if he accepted the offer and pushed for a trade.
“Harley Reid obviously re-signed last week for two more years until the end of 2028,” Twomey told AFL’s Gettable.
“Throughout that period we spoke about Hawthorn’s interest in him, and I said they were obsessed.
“There some details about this interest from them that I want to share.
“We can say they had an 11-year deal on the table for Harley Reid worth around the $1.7 (million) mark I understand.
“Add next year’s CBA deal and that ends up being around $18 mil, $19 mil or even $20 million mark.
“That gets to the biggest deal ever in football by some way.
“Harley Reid knew that, he saw that, he considered it and he re-signed with the Eagles for two more years, no strings attached.
“It just shows how keen the Hawks were to get this guy to Waverley.”
Reid would have become one of the highest-paid players in the league if he had taken the offer, while he also would have easily had the longest deal in the AFL.
The player who is signed to the longest deal currently is Melbourne’s Kysaish Pickett who is tied to the Demons until 2034.
