There has been a significant and encouraging update on the condition of harness racing driver Nathan Williamson following his serious accident at Alexandra Park on Friday night.
Williamson, 36, suffered a fractured skull and major head trauma while driving Captain’s Mistress, a horse he also trains, as the field approached the finish line.
“The back end of the cart broke off and Nathan fell to the track,” his father Phil Williamson told Sport Nation's Scotty & Izzy.
"The following runners had no time to avoid him and a couple of horses clipped him I think as they went by. He ended up with a massive head trauma."
Phil, along with his wife Bev and Nathan’s wife Katie, flew to Auckland on Saturday to be by his side.
“When we got there, things were pretty well, pretty serious. I've never been in an intensive care unit before and to see what was going on, and, it's your son lying there. It was pretty tough to take.”
Since then, Nathan’s recovery has exceeded expectations.
“From where we were a couple of days ago he's made a remarkable recovery to be in a much safer position than he was.”
Phil confirmed doctors were delighted with Nathan’s progress.
“The doctors were so happy with him that he came off life support yesterday and he was able to breathe for himself and stitched back his head injury which was quite a nasty cut above his head, which is fractured.
“We're so fortunate that he's been able to recover the way he has. The doctors are so thrilled with his progress.”
Nathan remains under close medical supervision, but his family says the improvement over the past few days has been nothing short of remarkable.
