The Silver Ferns’ Constellation Cup celebrations ended with a reality check, as Australia stormed home for a 68-58 win in Wednesday’s final test in Melbourne to retain their World No. 1 status.
The Ferns had already secured the Cup with a 3-0 series lead, but missed the chance to complete a clean sweep. Midcourter Kate Heffernan said the team had wanted to finish unbeaten, but credited the Diamonds for lifting their performance.
“We really did want to go for the 4-0 and we spoke about that,” Heffernan told Sport Nation.
“But honestly, we just didn’t turn up today and that’s about it.”
Heffernan did not put the loss down to fatigue after a busy year that included Commonwealth Games gold and four tests against Australia.

“I don’t really think fatigue’s affected this result,” she said. “I think Aussie actually just played better on the day.”
Grace Nweke, who was named the series’ most valuable player and received the inaugural Plummer-Aitken Medal, was among the players to spend time on the bench as the Silver Ferns made changes.
Nweke said she understood the decision, acknowledging she had not delivered in some moments and backing Emilia to take her opportunity.
“If you’re not doing your job, there’s people on the bench ready to come on,” she said.
“Amelia (Walmsley) has been biding her time and came on really well.”
Although surprised to receive the medal, Nweke said she was honoured by the recognition, while remaining focused on improving.
“I know that I played well, but I know I could be better,” she said.
The Silver Ferns now turn their attention to next year’s Netball World Cup, with Heffernan saying the players will first make the most of time at home before returning to competition.
They wind up a busy 2026 schedule with three matches against the Net Blacks NZ Men’s team in Hamilton on November 17, 19 and 21.
