Local trainer Allan Sharrock and red-hot apprentice Toni Davies combined to produce a winning double at New Plymouth on Saturday with Fulla Grace and Belle Tribute.
The victory on Belle Tribute for Davies, who currently enjoys a two-kilogram apprentice claim, was her eighth in the last week and came about with a never-say-die effort aboard the four-year-old daughter of Contributer who refused to give in following a head to head struggle with runner-up Our Jumala.
Davies had Belle Tribute nicely placed in third throughout behind stablemate Sindee and Bay Express but found herself two lengths in arrears shortly after turning for home as Sindee set sail for the winning post.
Under a mainly hands and heels ride, Belle Tribute levelled up on the inside of Sindee and headed her at the 100m before holding out the late burst by Our Jumala, who drove hard at the eventual winner but failed by a nose to claim the victory.
Sharrock was delighted with the performance and quick to point out Belle Tribute comes from a long line of winners that have been through his stable.
“She is a very game mare and showed that with her performance,” Sharrock said.
“She is just another one from the family with good ability and I’ve had some pretty good ones like Tavi Mac and Darci La Bella.
“She is only four so we might give her one more in this campaign then ease up on her over the depths of winter. She will go on any type of track but the goal will be to get her some black type and there are some nice races in the Spring she would be well suited to.”
Sharrock also had some kind words for Davies and the way she remained calm on the mare throughout the race.
“Toni is going very well, has her confidence up and the wins are starting to pile up for her,” he said.
“She rode that mare nicely as she didn’t overdo things, stayed patient and had the strength to really push her out in a tight finish.”
Davies made it three victories on the day and nine for the week by winning the last race on the card aboard Chester Boy for trainer John Wheeler, bringing her second career raceday treble up after achieving the feat for the first time last Saturday.
Belle Tribute is a daughter of Bellaroof who has proved a remarkable producer after winning five races under the tutelage of Sharrock. Her offspring include 10-race winner Darci Mac, multiple Group Two winner Darci La Bella (11 career wins) and people’s champion Tavi Mac, who won 12 races including four at stakes level from Sharrock’s New Plymouth stable.
Belle Tribute has now collected six wins from 17 starts for her breeder and owner Ann McCallum and over $133,000 in prizemoney.
