Antonio Shalfoon is set to make his debut for the Māori All Blacks this weekend as the team returns home to take on Scotland at Semenoff Stadium in Whangārei.
Daniel Rona has been named to start on the left wing, while Corey Evans joins the matchday 23 for the first time this year.
The Māori All Blacks are coming off a 50–23 win over Japan XV in Tokyo. Head Coach Ross Filipo (Muaupoko) said the performance gave the team confidence, but all focus is now on the challenge Scotland brings.
“Japan tested us with fast-paced rugby in hot conditions, and I was proud of the way the team came out in that second half in particular. They made quick decisions, and you could see the cohesion get better and better as the game went on,” said Filipo.
“We know Scotland have their own style, so we are now firmly looking forward. Scotland are physical, and the team is ready for that. We are focused on working collectively to balance our natural instincts with smart decision-making.”
The match in Whangārei marks a special return to home soil, with the team welcomed warmly by the Northland community.
Filipo, alongside assistant coaches Roger Randle (Ngāti Awa) and Greg Feek (Ngāti Kahungunu), has made minimal changes to the side.
The team was named today at the Northland Rugby Union clubrooms by local tamariki and rangatahi, with members of the New Zealand Māori Rugby Board and media in attendance.
