Sack Brigginshaw? Will legend get an Origin farewell?
Questions are being raised about whether Game II could be Ali Brigginshaw’s last game playing for Queensland.
The Maroons would lose Game II 26-6 against NSW on Thursday night at Allianz Stadium. This is the first time since 2022 and the first time in the three-game format that NSW has won the Origin shield.
In this year's series, Brigginshaw has struggled to perform for the Maroons, having not had the same influence in matches as she has in previous years.
And with the series now lost, Matt Russell wonders whether Queensland coach Tahnee Norris should move on from the legendary halfback and look to play a rising star like Georgia Hannaway.
“Georgia Hannaway, the young Cronulla Shark, is waiting there in the wings; Tahnee Norris needs to make changes,” Russell said on SEN 1170’s Breakfast.
“She’s got to plan for the future, they (Queensland) were an eternity away from New South Wales (in) Game I and Game II.
“So, if there is to be a change to be made, that could well be made.
“But how hard is it to sack a Rugby League legend like Ali Brigginshaw?”
Andrew Voss also wondered whether Queensland would make the move to replace her in the side.
“That is Ian Healy areas,” Voss said. “Does she get to have a farewell game? Well, maybe not."
Speaking post-game, Brigginshaw admitted she wasn’t sure whether this was her last game for Queensland. She would also talk about how hard this loss was for her and her teammates.
"Been here a long time, so you just never know when it's gonna be your last," she said.
"We try and we train so hard and we sacrifice so much, being away from home.
"I've been here 16 years - every game you play, winning is great, but losing hurts. If I didn't have any emotions, I guess the game wouldn't mean anything to me.
While the series may be decided, Queensland will be trying to avoid losing 3-0 in Game III.
That will take place in Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium on May 29th.
