“On absolute fire”: Walsh continues impressive form
Brett Kimmorley has praised the performance of Reece Walsh following his first International Test match for Australia.
The star fullback has continued his strong form following his epic grand final performance, which helped the Broncos claim their first premiership in 19 years.
In his debut, Walsh claimed the man of the match after an incredible display.
In the space of 80 minutes, Walsh achieved five tackle breaks, two line breaks, two line break assists, two tries and ran for 243 metres in Australia’s 26-6 win against England to see the Kangaroos take a 1-nil lead in the three-game series.
And the 1999 NRL premiership player has been blown away by his turnaround in form.
“The bloke is on absolute fire at the moment,” Kimmorley noted on SEN 1170’s The Run Home.
“Whatever Madge (Michael Maguire) has done for Reece Walsh or whatever Reece Walsh has done from halfway through the season, where he was struggling at the start of the year, coming up with mistakes, bad play.
“And there were people trying to give all this advice, bits and pieces, to how he played in the semi-finals, and the grand final performance was the best single performance from anyone I’ve seen for a whole game of football on a grand final day.
“And then he goes and repeats it again over there.”
But when speaking about England’s game, Kimmorley admitted that he was quite concerned about the lack of production from the spine.
“The thing that I’m concerned about…Jack Welsby, George Williams and Mikey Lewis, the No. 1, 6 and 7 for England, no line breaks, no line break assists,” he noted.
“So, where is the creativity coming from for the English side?
“Where are they going to challenge Australia from a defence point of view, where you would think that you’ve got to score 20 points to beat Australia.
“Because, with Reece Walsh in that form, in good conditions, Australia are going to have four tries in nearly every Test match they have.”
The Kangaroos will look to claim the Ashes series with a match to spare when they take on England next Sunday for the second Test.
The match will be played in Liverpool at the Hill Dickinson Stadium with kick-off at 1:30am AEDT.
