Raiders claim minor premiership in win against Tigers
The Canberra Raiders, for the first time since 1990, have claimed the minor premiership with a 24-10 win over the Wests Tigers at GIO Stadium.
Following the Storm’s loss against the Roosters on Friday night, the equation to getting that minor premiership was simple. Win, and it was theirs.
The game throughout the first half proved to be a close one despite Jed Stuart and Corey Horsburgh scoring tries for the Green Machine as they only led by two points at the break.
But in the second half, they kept the Tigers scoreless while Simi Sasagi and Ethan Strange managed to score and help see the Raiders claim the J. J. Giltinan Shield with a game left in the season.
Speaking after the game with Fox League, Canberra coach Ricky Stuart was proud of his team’s effort but noted that their eyes are fixed on claiming the premiership and breaking a 31-year drought.
“I’m very proud of them,” Stuart said.
“They’ve just been very consistent all year, they’ve just worked real hard, and it’s just been a wonderful season for them.
“So far, you win this competition, but the big one’s yet to come, that’s the one that you’ll want to win. And it’s a big five weeks ahead of us, six weeks ahead of us.”
Winning the minor premiership might just be the good omen that the Green Machine needs to break their 31-year premiership drought.
In that 1990 season, they would propel themselves from winning the minor premiership to win their second title in club history.
The Raiders have one more match against the Dolphins next week before they begin their finals campaign.
The Tigers, meanwhile, will close out their 2025 campaign against the Titans up on the Gold Coast as they can no longer mathematically make the finals.
