Hunt to play halfback for Broncos in first final

Brisbane Broncos veteran Ben Hunt has confirmed to SEN that he will be the starting halfback for their qualifying final against the Canberra Raiders.
Hunt has worn the seven jersey since Adam Reynolds’ hamstring injury in the Round 23 loss to the Melbourne Storm. Fellow playmaker Ezra Mam also suffered a hamstring injury in the same play.
Dynamic winger Selwyn Cobbo also went down with a hamstring issue in the same match.
Reynolds was shaping up as a surprise inclusion for the Broncos’ first final on Sunday but will instead watch his teammates from the sidelines as they try to book their place in a home preliminary final.
“This week, I will definitely be wearing (the seven jersey),” Hunt told SENQ.
“I don’t think Adam (Reynolds) and the other generals will be back yet.
“The mail I’m getting is that after this week, they will all be right to go.
“I’ve heard they’re getting pretty close.
“Reynolds and Ezra I think are the main two who are probably the closest to coming back.
“They’ll get through this week and we’ll see how they go.
“I’m excited for the opportunity (to play halfback) again.”
Hunt will play finals for the first time since 2018 when he was at the St George Illawarra Dragons and it will be his first final at the Broncos since the 2017 campaign.
The 35-year-old believes the Broncos are peaking at the right time of the season and can claim Brisbane’s first premiership since 2006.
“Over the last month, we have been building nicely,” Hunt continued.
“The win against Melbourne in Round 27 wasn’t pretty but we fought hard for each other the whole game.
“Everyone turned up and was doing their part. That’s what we’ve got to do in finals.
“There were definitely some missed tackles but if someone missed, there was someone scrambling hard.
“I came back to Brisbane to play finals footy and win a Premiership. It’s so exciting to be back at this club again.”
The Broncos travel to the nation’s capital on Sunday to take on the Raiders in the first qualifying final.
