Cole McConchie’s long wait has ended, with the Canterbury all-rounder officially elevated into the Blackcaps' T20 World Cup squad following Michael Bracewell’s injury.
McConchie, who had been with the team in India as a travelling reserve, received formal approval from the tournament’s Event Technical Committee to join the 15-man group.
The 34-year-old brings a wealth of experience, having played 133 T20 matches across a 14-year professional career, including 12 at international level.

A mainstay of the Canterbury Kings, McConchie has captained the side to six straight Super Smash Grand Finals and is widely regarded as one of the competition’s most reliable all-rounders.
He made his international debut in Bangladesh in 2021, where he impressed in a five-match T20 series in Mirpur, finishing as New Zealand’s second-leading wicket-taker with seven scalps.
Speaking after his inclusion, McConchie said the call-up was one he never takes for granted.
“It’s pretty surreal to be here,” he said. “A World Cup in India and Sri Lanka doesn’t get much bigger than that. You’re always chasing the chance to wear the fern, so to get the opportunity is incredibly special. I’m ready to contribute however I can.”
New Zealand close out their Group D campaign on Tuesday, facing Canada in Chennai.
