Matty Johns weighs in on radio's "disrespectful" Bennett act

South Sydney Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett has imposed a blanket ban for broadcaster Triple M following a poorly received radio stunt.
The segment featured a soundbite from Bennett’s weekly press conference ahead of the Rabbitohs’ Round 22 match against the Broncos. Bennett’s ex-wife Trish and current partner Dale Tynan were referenced in the skit.
Tynan reportedly heard the skit live and called Triple M to lodge an official complaint. The segment has since been deleted.
SEN’s Matty Johns believed Bennett was within his rights to snub Triple M for the rest of the season.
“We (in the media) push the edges and can sometimes go too far,” Johns said on SEN 1170.
“The question on Trish was bad (because) of the pain that separation caused.
“She is a very private person.
“I just wonder what would’ve happened if (former Triple M host) Marty Sheargold had said that."
“I dealt with all of this in the book I wrote about Bennett,” The Australian’s Andrew Webster added.
“It was very, very tricky and very, very sensitive. There is a lot of hurt there and I even feel uncomfortable talking about it now.
“I know how sensitive that issue was at the time and remains so.
“The hero of Wayne’s life is Trish Bennett and she is the North Star. That’s exactly how their daughter Beth describes her.
“We all have a good laugh but it definitely crossed a line.
“She is a flawless character who has been through a lot and she didn’t need that.”
Triple M have since apologised to Bennett but the 75-year-old has banned the broadcaster from all media opportunities including post match press conferences.
South Sydney CEO Blake Solly said the club would stand by their coach’s decision.
