Liam Lawson banks F1 points in Hungary

Liam Lawson banked Formula 1 championship points overnight with a strong performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix, bouncing back after missing out on a top-10 finish in Belgium last week.
The Kiwi started from 11th on the grid after failing to reach the third phase of qualifying on Sunday, lining up behind both McLarens, Ferraris, Mercedes, Red Bulls, Racing Bulls teammate Arvid Lindblad, and Audi’s Nico Hülkenberg.
When the green flag dropped, Lawson got the jump and moved up to eighth place after Turn 1.
And after receiving car upgrades between the Belgian and Hungarian events, Lawson was also relieved the teams strategy had paid off.
“Very good call on the strategy as well, had me doubting it in the car but very, very good job, thank you, the car was so good,” he said on the team radio after the race.

Lawson now moves to ninth in the championship standings with 43 points, just one point ahead of Alpine’s Pierre Gasly.
2025 champion Lando Norris won the race, securing McLaren’s first win of the season, while teammate Oscar Piastri’s race ended after contact with Carlos Sainz while fighting for a podium position.
Max Verstappen finished second, while 2026 championship leader Kimi Antonelli rounded out the podium in third.
It was the final race before the mid-season summer break, with Formula 1 returning at the Dutch Grand Prix in four weeks.
