Former Aussie cricket great in induced coma
Australian cricket great Damien Martyn is in an induced coma after falling ill with meningitis.
Martyn is currently in a Queensland hospital after being admitted last week and is receiving treatment for the disease.
Meningitis is the inflammation of protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord, and can lead to swelling of the brain if not treated quickly and properly making it a dangerous illness.
There are hopes Martyn will be brought out of his coma in the coming days, though there are still fears for his health.
The 54-year-old played 67 Tests for Australia between 1992 and 2006 and is regarded as one of Australia’s best batters, scoring 4406 Test runs at an average of 46.37.
One of his greatest knocks in Australian colours came in the 2003 ODI World Cup final, where he scored 88* off 84 balls with a broken finger.
Since retiring, Martyn has continued to work within cricket media as a commentator.
Martyn’s former teammates Darren Lehmann and Ryan Campbell were among those to wish the batter a speedy recovery, with Lehmann writing on X: “Lots of love and prayers sending @damienmartyn way. Keep strong and fighting legend. Love to the family xxx.”
