Socceroos star Massimo Luongo’s hopes of being selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are over after he suffered a season-ending knee injury.
The 33-year-old currently plays for English Championship side Millwall and the club last night confirmed the worst.
Luongo will undergo knee surgery to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right side.
He sustained the injury against QPR last weekend.
“Everyone at the club sends Massimo their support and best wishes on his road to recovery,” a Millwall statement said.
Luongo later took to Instagram to thank people for their support.
“Football can throw some big surprises at you,” Luongo posted on Instagram.
“Thank you for all the messages of support. Best of luck to the everyone on the team and all the staff for the rest of season. I’ll do my best to play my part.”
Yet to be named in any of Tony Popovic’s side, Luongo’s hope of playing at next year’s tournament were slim not impossible before this injury.
He originally retired from international football at the end of 2023.
He since made himself available for selection again and was selected to play in two FIFA qualifiers in 2024 against Japan and China.
