Just when Australia thought they were well rid of Stuart Broad the Englishman is set to take up a coaching role with South Africa for the World Test Championship.
Broad retired from cricket after the 2023 Ashes series but remains top of the list when it comes to players to take the most wickets against Australia.
Broad took 604 wickets during his 167-Test career with 153 of them coming against the Aussies.
Since calling time on his career the 38-year-old has been working in commentary but will take a brief pause to assist South Africa with their preparations to face Australia at Lord’s later this month.
According to the UK Telegraph, Broad will work with the Proteas in the lead-up to the June 11 Test but will not be in the rooms during owing to his broadcast commitments.
“Broad’s media commitments mean he will not actually be in the South African dressing room for the match itself. But he will work with the team and coaching staff before the match with his remit being to work on specific plans for the Australian batsmen and how to bowl at Lord’s,” the publication wrote.
WHO GETS THE NOD?
With just over a week to go before Australia gets their title defence under way, Australia cricket legend Ricky Ponting has tipped Sam Konstas and Scott Boland to miss out on selection.
It is widely expected that Marnus Labuschagne and Cam Green will get the nod despite the former being woefully out of form.
"I actually think that that will go with Labuschagne," Ponting said on the ICC Review podcast. "Looking back to the last World Test Championship Final there was some talk about David Warner and whether he should hold his spot going into that.
"And there was a bit of talk around the team about wanting to get through that period or that phase or if you like, with the same group of players and give them the chance to, to be able to play off in that one-off final.
“Labuschagne has been through this cycle with the team, albeit batting at No.3 and I think they will want to get through the cycle with the same players so I think Labuschagne will get the nod.
"Whether I agree with it or not, it's a different thing... all will be revealed in the next couple of weeks.
"It's a really tough selection every time because every time Boland plays, he just does so well. But unfortunately, if Hazlewood is fit, I think Hazlewood comes straight back into the team."
