World Cup-winning All Black Conrad Smith has been appointed as New Zealand Rugby’s Head of Men’s High Performance.
This appointment comes after NZR's strong commitment to having a ‘world-leading high-performance system’ that will deliver ongoing success for the continued development of world class players, coaches, match officials and support staff.
Smith will take on the role in early September, where he will take lead in delivering the men’s high performance programme across the national game, working closely with Super Rugby sides, and Provincial Unions.
Since Smith’s retirement from professional rugby, he has remained closely connected to the sport across all levels, having a tenure on the Taranaki Rugby Union Board, volunteering as a referee and having worked as the Chief of Rugby Operations since 2018 for the International Rugby Players Association.
Smith says the opportunity to contribute to the future of rugby in New Zealand was one he was excited to pursue.
"Rugby has given me so much throughout my life, and I'm looking forward to giving back," Smith said in a statement.
“It's an exciting time for New Zealand Rugby, with outstanding people joining the organisation in the high performance space. To work alongside Don Tricker, Mike Collins and so many talented people across the game is something I am genuinely excited by."

Smith says he is looking forward to development systems where players, coaches, referees and support staff all can thrive. He advocates sustainable success doesn’t happen by accident.
“It is built over time through strong relationships, clear systems, quality decision-making and a shared commitment to continuous improvement.
“This role is about young boys and girls coming through community rugby, through our age-grade teams and being the best in the world in our national teams. That’s what inspires me."
Director of High Performance Don Tricker said that the appointment of Smith will strengthen NZR's ability to connect strategy with delivery across the men's pathway.
“Conrad brings an exceptional combination of lived experience, intellect and credibility. We are delighted to have recruited someone of Conrad’s standing and experience,” Tricker said.
“He has seen all parts of the New Zealand rugby system through his own development and understands what excellence looks like at the highest level.”
Tricker says this role is about strengthening the entirety of men’s high performance pathways, from talent identification all through to the national sides.
“Ultimately, we are developing people that our national teams want to pick and Conrad's ability to take people with him makes him exceptionally well placed to lead this work," Tricker added.
