Colin McNiff's Friday racing preview at Launceston (03/04)
Although she will be represented by just one runner, trainer Siggy Carr is confident her recent winning form can continue when she takes her promising 2yo Bewicked to Launceston on Friday.
Bewicked will tackle the 1100m 2yo maiden against five others, but the filly has the benefit of race fitness against her opposition, who are all facing the starter for the first time.
Bewicked has raced only once and finished a promising third behind Momentslikethese in Launceston a fortnight ago.
“She’s got the race experience which the others don’t have, which will play in her favour, she’s got good gate speed, which also helps with 2yo’s, and she had a trial in between runs, which will bring her on a little fitness and education-wise,” Carr said.
“She’s in the right type of race, I think she has come on from that last run, and I think she has got a bit of talent.
“She’s a really straightforward filly, she has been since the time we got her from Victoria, and she’s a really nice filly. I think we will be in for a nice season with her as a 3-year-old, but she has shown all the signs to continue to this race, and then she will head to the paddock.
“Blair Dennys bred her, she was always coming down to us, he just got her broken in whilst in Victoria where she was bred ( Headwater x Wicked), and she stayed a lot of time there with Seymour Bloodstock, she headed down to us a well-educated filly, and we look forward to what she can do for us.”
The Carr stable has found form in recent weeks with three winners and three placings from her past 10 starters.
“We had a really dry run there for a bit but now the teams is going really well, we’ve actually cut back on numbers and we’ve been able to get back down to the beach more often and doing the one percenters that count and spending that bit of time with them is certainly showing now.
“We try to go every day, just rotate different horses each time so normally they get to go a couple of times a week and we just try and work that in as much as possible.”
Of her recent winners Carr is hopeful that Artillery Fire can step up through the grades next summer, the mare won at her past two starts but has now been tipped out for a well earned break.
“She had just had enough, she had five runs for the preparation and had a couple of tough runs in those so we have put her away now and will give her a nice spell and bring her back mid year and give her a little prep and then she will come back for the carnival and if she continues to improve the way she has I think we could find a nice race for her.”
The Good Friday Family Dun Day meeting has quickly become one of the most popular on the Tasmanian racing calendar and a good crowd is once again anticipated with heaps of activities and give aways for the kids.
First race is timed for 13.07. Matt Reid will be trackside for Tasracing Live.
