Following Jacob Duffy’s inspiring five-wicket haul to close out the West Indies’ first innings, Devon Conway and Tom Latham safely navigated seven overs to end Day Two at Hagley Oval on 32 without loss, leading by 96 runs.
Latham (14 no) and Conway (15 no) will resume the Blackcaps’ second innings when play continues tomorrow at 11am NZDT.
Duffy's five send the Blackcaps back to bat in Day 2
A superb five-wicket haul from Jacob Duffy inspired the Blackcaps to bowl the West Indies out after the visitors had gone to tea at 116 for 5.
Chanderpaul delivered a patient and disciplined innings after the interval, batting for 264 minutes to bring up a well-deserved half-century in the 58th over - the second of his Test career. His resistance, however, ended shortly after when Devon Conway redeemed his earlier missed chances with a sharp catch at square leg off Zak Foulkes, removing Chanderpaul for 52.
Nathan Smith came agonisingly close to his first wicket of the match, but a review - taken more out of curiosity than confidence - revealed his delivery had passed over the stumps, allowing Tevin Imlach to continue.

Day Two looked set to wrap up early when bad light and a brief spell of rain halted play after 71 overs, but following a 30-minute delay, the players returned. Off the very first ball after the resumption, Duffy found the glove of Tevin Imlach, dismissing him for 14 to claim his second wicket of the innings.
He struck again with the final ball of the same over, this time completing a caught-and-bowled to remove Johann Layne for a duck. Duffy continued dismantling the West Indies tail in the 76th over, clean-bowling Jayden Seales for 2 before sealing his maiden Test five-wicket haul by knocking over Ojay Shields for a duck just three balls later.
The Blackcaps will take the crease to close out the day’s play.

Henry sparks collapse, West Indies lose three quick after lunch
Shai Hope continued to build confidently after the lunch interval, reaching his sixth Test half-century by the end of the 36th over.
At the other end, Chanderpaul remained composed, producing a disciplined display through to drinks.
The West Indies went to the break in a solid position at 97 for 2. However, the sustained pressure from the Blackcaps paid dividends immediately after the interval.
Jacob Duffy removed Hope for 56, successfully overturning the on-field decision upon review for New Zealand’s third wicket - Duffy’s first of the Test.
Roston Chase joined Chanderpaul at the crease, looking to steady the innings, but the West Indies’ plans quickly unravelled. Matt Henry struck twice in quick succession, first finding the outside edge of Chase, who departed for a duck after facing eight balls, and three balls later, dismissing Greaves for another duck.
Both catches were taken cleanly by Tom Latham behind the stumps, leaving the West Indies reeling at 106 for 5 - a major, and sudden collapse.
Tevin Imlach (3 no) and Chanderpaul (45 no) will remain on strike after tea, with the West Indies 116 for 5.

Foulkes strikes first ball after short batting stint on Day 2
New Zealand's morning with the bat lasted all of three balls on Day 2 of the first Test.
Jayden Seales found a light touch off Zak Foulkes as the ball was heading down leg side and caught behind, with Foulkes immediately asking for a review of the umpire's decision while bizarrely walking off at the same time.
"You can't do that - that's an insult to the umpire," Ian Smith said on Sport Nation's live commentary.
"If he doesn't think he's hit it, fair enough, but why walk off? I think it's a little bit disrespectful to be perfectly honest."

As the Blackcaps took the field, Sport Nation received an update following the earlier news that Tom Latham would take on the wicket-keeping duties with Tom Blundell absent to undergo scans on a hamstring injury.
Daryl Mitchell joins the side in a fielding-only capacity at first slip in a 'managed environment designed to keep his workload light.' NZ Cricket also confirmed that Mitchell was near fit for full first Test participation after recovering from the groin injury picked up during the ODI series against the West Indies.
But with his first Test delivery on home soil, Foulkes struck with a short-length delivery finished by Will Young's incredible diving catch to his left that dismissed West Indies opener John Cambell for 1.
Will Young nearly enjoyed another stroke of luck in the field, but he put down Alick Athenaze in the ninth over with a relatively straightforward chance that should have been taken.
Matt Henry required no assistance from the fielders two overs later, as the quick produced a superb delivery that went through the gate and clipped the top of off stump, removing the remaining opener Athenaze for 4 and leaving the visitors struggling at 10 for 2.
Zak Foulkes was unfortunate not to claim his second wicket on home soil. His appeal against Tagenarine Chanderpaul in the 12th over went to review, but the decision remained with the umpire’s call.
Chanderpaul survived another chance in the 16th over when Devon Conway, diving full stretch to his left, failed to hold a sharp opportunity from a lively Nathan Smith delivery in the bowler’s first over of the Test.
Despite conceding 12 runs from his opening three overs, the Smith–Duffy combination initially unsettled Shai Hope, who was described by Ian Smith as looking “fidgety and jerky.”
However, both Hope and Chanderpaul soon grew in confidence, and their partnership strengthened accordingly. Pressure shifted back onto the Blackcaps bowlers as a 12-run 23rd over released the mounting tension, with the West Indian pair reaching a 50-run stand by the end of the 25th.
Conway had a second opportunity to remove Chanderpaul in a similar fashion to the earlier chance, but once again the catch did not stick.
At the break, the West Indies sit at 68 for 2, with Hope (33 no) and Chanderpaul (25 no), their 58-run partnership providing a solid platform to build upon after lunch.
Blundell to undergo scans for first innings injury
The second day of the first Test at Hagley Oval begins with an injury update from the Blackcaps camp.
NZ Cricket have confirmed that Tom Blundell will undergo scans today for a right hamstring injury that was sustained during day one while batting. The New Zealand wicketkeeper scored 29 runs off 39 balls before his stumps were castled by West Indies debutant Ojay Shields.
A more detailed update on Blundell's condition is to come following further assessment by the Blackcaps' medical staff.
Day 1's rain delay sees an earlier start time of 10.35am today. New Zealand will pick up where they left off at 231/9 with Zak Foulkes and Jacob Duffy at the crease - both with four runs to their name.
When either is dismissed and the Blackcaps take the field, captain Tom Latham will pick up wicketkeeping duties in Blundell's absence.
