Blackcaps selector Gavin Larsen has pushed back on criticism around Henry Nicholls’ selection, saying the experienced batter proved his worth with his domestic performance during his time away from the Test squad.
Nicholls’ inclusion has been a talking point following NZ Cricket's latest central contracts list, particularly with calls for younger players to be given opportunities.
But Larsen made it clear the decision came down to one thing.
“He had just a magnificent batting season last year. He backed the selectors into a corner. That’s what we ask our players to do,” Larsen told Sport Nation Mornings.
“You shoot the lights out and you make it too difficult for us not to pick you.”
Larsen also pointed to Nicholls’ proven record at international level.
“He’s a class player. You look at his numbers, he’s got 10 Test hundreds, he’s proven himself in ODI cricket as well. So look, absolutely no doubt that he’s the right guy.”
While acknowledging the noise around youth selection, Larsen says age isn’t a concern as long as players are performing.
“I have no qualms at all about having guys who are in their 30s playing international cricket… as long as they’re still performing at the level that we demand as selectors, then they’ll always be part of the conversation.”
He added that succession planning remains a priority, but it needs to be done at the right time.
“Our job as selectors is to make sure… we are folding in the next group of players at the right time.”
