Why “fundamentally flawed” Test is a “complete shemozzle”
Tom Morris was scathing in his assessment of the fourth Ashes Test which ended inside two days.
England notched a drought-breaking win over Australia at the MCG in a wild Boxing Day Test which had 36 wickets fall in less than two full days of play.
It’s the second two-day Test this Ashes series after the Perth Test also ended very early.
Morris says this is a “complete disaster” for Cricket Australia who stand to lose around $10 million from the shortened match.
“This sort of cricket favours Instagram reels and TikTok and clips, that if you watch various clips across the day you think ‘what a game of cricket’,” he said on SEN’s The New Ball.
“If you sit here and understand the nuance of Test cricket it’s actually fundamentally flawed.
“A two-day Test match - let’s not sugarcoat it - is a complete disaster for Cricket Australia. $10 million (loss) or thereabouts.
“It’s Sunday here, beautiful weather and there won’t be any cricket at the MCG.
“So yes, TikTok cricket might favour those young people, but TikTok cricket is no good for the game at Test level.”
Morris added: “At a time when the broadcasters are really paying a lot of cash for this sport, and at a time when Test cricket is under the pump the most to survive and be financially viable, we have a two-day Test match.
“It’s a complete disaster for the game. I’m not laying the blame on any one individual, but this can’t happen again.
“We can’t have this happen again. It’s happened twice this series and it’s a complete shemozzle.”
