Barmy Army planning 'special' Warne Ashes tribute
England’s Barmy Army have promised a heartfelt tribute to Shane Warne when they takeover bay 13 at the MCG Test this December.
Warnie died suddenly while on holiday in March of 2022 and this December marks the first Ashes Boxing Day Test since his passing.
On the eve of the Ashes, Warne’s son Jackson opened up on the correspondence he has had from the travelling England fan group
“I am not sure what that is yet but they’ve said, ‘Jacko, stay tuned’,” Jackson is quoted as saying by News Corp.
“I am grateful they’ve taken the time to come all the way across the other side of the world – but hopefully they’re not as loud as the Aussies.
“The English love Dad, the ‘Barmy Army’ love Dad.
“As much as they used to knock him, ‘Who ate all the pies? You’re overweight, you’re fat’ all that sort of stuff.
“But as Dad retired and got into commentary, they loved him.
“I remember being out in public with Dad in England and he would sometimes get a better reception in the UK than back in Australia.
“They loved him, I think Boxing Day is going to be a really special Test.”
Anthony Wallace, the Barmy Army’s Melbourne-based leader, compared Warne to Collingwood star Nick Daicos.
“Well first off we used to hate Warnie because he got us out all the time, I was there when he got his hat-trick at the MCG,” he said.
“He was just an entertainer, how would you say it? It’s like Nick Daicos at the moment, everyone hates him because he plays for Collingwood.
“But they really love him because he’s just so good, that’s how I would refer it back to the Australian way of thinking.
“Some people admire the great players and Shane Warne was one of them.”
The first Test between Australia and England begins on November 21 at Optus Stadium. Catch every ball of the Ashes on the Sport Nation app via SEN.
