'Surprised myself': Cummins provides injury update
Australian Test captain Pat Cummins is tracking “better than (he) would have thought” as he attempts to prove his fitness for the upcoming Brisbane and Adelaide Ashes Tests.
The 32-year-old suffered a back stress injury in the wake of a three-Test tour in the West Indies and was ruled out of the opening Perth Test.
However, the skipper was seen in an hour-long session on Monday with the Aussie squad, boosting confidence his return may be sooner than first thought.
Cummins told on Ricky Ponting Channel 7 that he has ticked off all boxes thus far.
Cummins: “I’m probably on track, if not probably better than I would have thought a month or so ago. A lot can go wrong when you go from nothing to trying to build up. Fortunately so far, everything has felt great. I’ve been pulling up well and probably surprised myself if anything. Yeah, obviously, will do a bit more work this week, bowling and having a couple days off. All going well so far.”
Ponting: “What is the actual plan? Do you have a certain amount of overs you have to bowl to prove yourself fit for Brisbane? Is it a day on, day off, what does the workload look like?”
Cummins: “Going on three-day cycles at the moment. Sort of bowl, but I've been bowling up to ten overs and then have two full rest days, let the bone and body recover and then go again. Tick that box. You move on to the next session. It’s been really good. We will see. Obviously Brisbane is two weeks away. A few more sessions and we’ll see if there is a chance.”
